Afonso Henriques, almost unrecognizable due to the clothing he presents, and the coat of arms of the Cistercian Order can be seen right at the entrance to the property and accentuate the desire to visit the Quinta do Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, in Tarouca, district of Viseu.
In fact, walking through the more than 17 hectares of Quinta do Mosteiro is like returning to the past, traveling through time and rediscovering other eras that illuminate the present!
Quinta do Mosteiro is a property located in Salzedas, a wine-growing village in the Távora-Varosa region whose Galhosa river runs through more than 17 hectares of cultivated land with string vines and vineyards, orchards, with apple cultivation currently being the predominant, but there are also olive trees, elderberries, walnut trees and almond trees in abundance, with special emphasis on the trellises, inviting the owners of these farms to stroll through their lands and, in the meantime, they took the opportunity to taste the grapes from the vines intertwined in the branches. Also highlight other idyllic spaces, worthy of being immortalized, why not, by the seventh art, without forgetting that they are crowned by the sound and charm of the river, always marking its majestic presence!
The rebirth of the Cistercian Order in Portugal is the challenge facing you, esteemed client, investor client!
Allow yourself the privilege of extracting all the potential that this gigantic property offers and becoming a driving agent for tourism in the north, in the Douro region, in the Varosa valley, along the paths of the Cistercian monks.
In the small town of Salzedas where one of the most beautiful monuments in the Varosa valley stands majestically, belonging to the route of the buildings of the Cistercian Order, we do not forget that it is an integral part of the then monastery, the Tulhas building with the guesthouse on the 1st floor, the residential building where the monks lived, as well as other dependencies of the farm, which served to support all the activities of the Cistercian order.
Belonging to the Cistercian Order, it dates back to the 12th century, and its space was donated by Teresa Afonso, daughter of Count Afonso Nunes de Celanova, and wife of D. Egas Moniz, the Aio. In the 17th and 18th centuries the monastery was expanded, highlighting a new cloister in the 18th century designed by the Maltese architect Carlos Gimach.
It was classified as a National Monument in 1997 and in 2002 the Portuguese State began the progressive restoration of the buildings and assets.
The integration of the Monastery in 2009 into the Vale do Varosa Project made it possible to open the space to the public in October 2011, where it is possible to visit several exhibitions.
Outside, next to the main elevation of the monastery, a two-story building, belonging to the former convent, with a Renaissance portico, on which there is a niche topped with a curved pediment.
