Gaeiras is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Óbidos, with 10.20 km² in area and 2,331 inhabitants (2011) . Its population density is 228.5 inhabitants / km². It was elevated to town on April 19, 2001.
Until the 15th century, little is known about the history of Gaeiras, when Infante D. Henrique, son of D. Manuel I, at the request of the Mayor of Óbidos, D. Dinis de Lencastre, also Commander of the Order of Christ and his wife D. Isabel Henriques, transferred the Convent of São Miguel from the place of Trás do Outeiro to the Gaeiras, due to the unhealthy waters and mosquito pests in that place, and on October 20, 1602, the first stone of the new chapel was laid. This Convent was home to Franciscan Arrábidos friars, who are buried in this chapel by the Counts of Óbidos, of the family of D. Vasco Mascarenhas.
At the beginning of the century, the Englishman Henrique Tompsen, installed a tannery manufacture in the locality of Gaeiras, taking advantage of the good conditions existing in the region, both in terms of supply of oak bark, from which the tannin is extracted, an essential component for the process of tannery; or taking advantage of the different courses and springs of water existing in the locality, which allowed the different phases of washing and refining of the complex process of tanning the hides.
The Parish of Gaeiras was created on October 4, 1985, in a long process, being an old desire of its inhabitants who with great effort and willpower achieved their goals.
The municipal autarchic mandates of the late 70s, early 80s are already distant. In that distant time, the President of the CM of Óbidos at the time, Pereira Júnior and the people of Gaeiras, put their shoulders to the idea of creating the parish of Gaeiras , legitimate aspiration of its people.
On April 19, 2001, Gaeiras was elevated to Vila after the candidacy work of the Junta de Freguesia, with the support of the Óbidos City Council in the Assembly of the Republic, which constitutes an example of proud development for the parish and to the municipality of Óbidos.
