It is the largest municipality in the district of Coimbra (almost 400 km2 in area) and is located in the center of a geographical triangle of special economic relevance, with the cities of Coimbra, Aveiro and Figueira da Foz as its apexes. The former province is Beira Coast, but the current notation (NUTS) classifies its location as part of the Central Region, sub-region of Baixo Mondego.

The municipality is made up of 14 parishes, with 35,742 inhabitants (2016), delimited by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the municipalities of Vagos, Oliveira do Bairro and Anadia to the north, Figueira da Foz, Montemor-o-Velho, Coimbra to the south and Mealhada to the east.
