The Parish Council of Querença, Tôr and Benafim was created in 2012, under Law nº 22/2012 of May 30, and was born from the aggregation of the parishes of Querença, Tôr and Benafim.
This, which is the youngest parish in the municipality, is located between Barrocal and Serra, in the central area of the municipality of Loulé and is characterized by the typicality of its villages, its natural beauties, the traditions and the potential of tourism. interior linked to nature, gastronomy and popular culture.
The local economy, which previously relied on the agricultural sector with a predominance of dried fruits and vegetables, now enjoys a new panorama, with ongoing projects for the creation of enterprises linked to tourism, namely Vale do Freixo and Quinta da Ombria. Quinta do Freixo, in Benafim, is currently the most important tourist development center in the parish. It is an agritourism unit that has, in addition to accommodation, catering, food production of organic products, pedestrian routes, among others.
It is in the village of Querença that one of the most famous medronhos is distilled and the most appreciated chorizo is produced, in addition to other typicalities. Here we find a typical cuisine that local restaurants preserve as genuinely as possible. Typical dishes from Querença include, among others, Chicken Cerejada, Galo de Cabidela and Xerém (maize porridge, traditional in the Algarve).
The Local Protected Landscapes of Fonte da Benémola and Rocha da Pena are true ex-libris of the county's natural heritage. Rocha da Pena, a steep cornice made of hard limestone, is a magnificent environmental monument of great natural beauty, both from a geological and biodiversity point of view. Fonte da Benémola, whose heritage is linked to water, is home to biotopes of great interest, both from a geological and landscape point of view, as well as in terms of fauna and flora. There are more than 300 different species of plants in this Local Protected Landscape and more than 100 species of birds that make their nests on the slopes of the valley and on the banks of the stream.
Tôr has enormous underground wealth, as it is located on one of the largest aquifers in Europe and is one of the main water supplies to the city of Loulé.
In the field of cultural heritage, aspects worthy of mention and very characteristic of the parish are the windmills, the mills, the daughter-in-laws, the threshing floors, the dams, the lime and plaster mines. The Salustreira Caves next to Fonte da Benémola and the Roman Bridge of Tôr, which is considered a municipal monument of high historical value, are must-visit places for tourists who want to discover the interior.
Of the festivities held annually in this Union of Parishes, the traditional Feast in Honor of Nossa Senhora da Glória, in Benafim, stands out; the Sausage Festival, in honor of St. Louis, in Querença; and the Feast of Santa Rita, at Tôr.
